When you have a traffic accident in a car in which one of the drivers involved is under the influence of a substance, it is said in the United States that the person was driving under influence (DUI).
Driving under influence points to people who consumes alcohol or some other substance or drug that can alter their state of consciousness and perception.
In all US states, it is a crime for a motorist to operate a vehicle while affected by the effects of alcohol or other drugs, including prescription drugs. Depending on the state, this fault is called driving under the influence (DUI), driving while intoxicated (DWI) or a similar term.
