Takes place 2018 Refugee Caravan towards CDMX
The organization People Without Borders carries out the 2018 Refugee Caravan with the participation of around 2 thousand people mostly from Central American countries, like El Salvador, Nicaragua and Guatemala.
Peoples struggle for a better life
Irineo Mujica, director of Pueblos sin Fronteras (People Without Borders), said that the objective of this mobilization is “to raise awareness among Mexicans of the ordeal suffered by migrants on their way, sometimes to the United States, sometimes to Mexico.”
Every year thousands of men, women and even children with or without their parents, embark on the pitiful path to these countries in search of a better life. They abandon, in many cases, extreme poverty, and risk the most valuable thing they have, their lives.
On the way to their destination, they face terrible situations like robberies, kidnappings, murders, and rapes, in addition to the abuse of the authorities.
Mexico, is not a transit country but a destination to live
Speaking to the press, Mujica said that most of the migrants who travel in the caravan have no intention of reaching the US, but of staying in Mexico.
He added that, given the tightening of immigration policies by US President Donald Trump, many remain in Tijuana, Monterrey, Guadalajara or Mexico City, places where they find work.
The activist and leader of the caravan said that the problem in Mexico is that the country’s authorities have only granted refuge to a very small number of Central Americans who request it.
The goal of the march
The human caravan, which began in Honduras in mid-March and arrived at the border between Mexico and Guatemala on March 26, is traveling to the Mexican capital where they will seek to be received by authorities of the Mexican Commission for Assistance to Refugees (Comar) , senators and will lead demonstrations before the US Embassy, and in the representatives of the United Nations (UN) and Organization of American States (OAS).
Trump attacks the migrant mobilization
News about the 2018 Refugee Caravan reached the White House, where President Trump used his twitter account to state his opinion
Mexico is doing very little, if not NOTHING, at stopping people from flowing into Mexico through their Southern Border, and then into the U.S. They laugh at our dumb immigration laws. They must stop the big drug and people flows, or I will stop their cash cow, NAFTA. NEED WALL!
Mexico has the absolute power not to let these large “Caravans” of people enter their country. They must stop them at their Northern Border, which they can do because their border laws work, not allow them to pass through into our country, which has no effective border laws…..

In response to these remarks, the Mexican Foreign Relations Secretary, Luis Videgaray, posted the following text in his Twitter account:
Mexico and the US work together on migration issues in the region. The data confirms this. This cooperation should not be questioned by imprecise news reports. Defending dignity and human rights does not contradict the rule of law. Happy Easter.
Felices Pascuas
